In 2002, Scott Fisher began looking for an opportunity to get out of the cold Midwest in which he had lived most of his life. Scott had been working for a LTL carrier who was the Midwest partner of Estes. Over the previous seven years Mr. Fisher worked closely with the Estes Sr. management team as the partnership between the LTL carrier and Estes continued to grow. "Beginning a freight forwarding company had been a desire of mine for years," states Fisher, "I was waiting for just the right opportunity."
The opportunity presented itself in 2003 with many of the giant LTL carriers creating forwarding divisions; Scott felt that Estes Express might be open to discussing such a possibility.
Mr. Fisher contacted Mr. Billy Hupp, Executive Vice President, in January and arranged a meeting in Las Vegas to discuss how a forwarding operation could enhance Estes Express Lines.
In February of the same year, Mr. Fisher introduced his business plan to Mr. Hupp and Mr. Estes and it was accepted.
"March 2003, we finally decided to move forward and that was when the fun started!" exclaims Fisher.
Scott dove right in, hired "airfreight" people, got their freight forwarding authority, found the right technology that was compatible with the Estes AS400, found and set up contracts with asset based providers, developed rates, terms and conditions, etc, and in September 2003 Estes Air Transportation Services was born!
The first year Estes Air moved 865 shipments and $565,000 in revenue. Since that time Estes Air has grown consistently. In 2008, they have 90 employees, have moved 140,000 shipments and as of December approximately $25 million in revenue.
"From the first day, our focus has been on the customer and provide the best experience each and every time they ship with us,"remarks Mr. Fisher. "One thing is for certain, we are passionate about our focus and will never deviate from it."
As of May 1, 2009 Estes Air Forwarding changed its name to Estes Forwarding Worldwide. The new name and branding strategy more accurately reflects the broader array of services the company offers in the midst of growing demands in the global logistics and transportation markets.
